Science Committee On the Water
The FLM Science Committee enjoyed two trips out on the lake this summer in board member Christy Crandall's new boat.  We have been talking about several possible volunteer programs - measuring shoreline erosion, measuring water depth (bathymetry), or measuring water quality.  On these test runs, we took depth measurements, looked up GPS coordinates, measured turbidity with a secchi tube, and tried a LaMotte test kit for water quality monitoring with simple color changing kits for parameters like pH, nitrate, and phosphate.
Would you be interested in monitoring water quality on the lake next summer?  Send a note to Christy at science@friendsoflakemonroe.org for more information.  We are also toying with the idea of a "Science Cruise" where we would bring a variety of sampling equipment on a pontoon boat and let everyone give it a try.  Let us know if you think you would come!

Forestry Field Day October 8
Join us on Wednesday October 8 for an informal forestry field day at the home of Mary Madore and Michael May.  They reside on 66 acres of classified forest in the Lake Monroe watershed.  Brummett’s Creek borders their front yard and feeds into North Fork Salt Creek, which flows into Lake Monroe.

We will tour part of the forest and learn about their forest stewardship.  Topics will include trail maintenance to minimize soil erosion, battling invasive species without the use of herbicides, and planting new trees to support healthy succession.  Coffee and pastries will be provided.

Please register by October 3 at https://www.friendsoflakemonroe.org/events-page/forestry-field-day

Septic Pumping Vouchers Still Available in Jackson County
Septic pumping vouchers are still available for households in the Lake Monroe/Salt Creek watershed in northwestern Jackson County.  Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Raymond Foundation, we are offering up to $200 off septic tank pumping as a way to encourage people to care for their systems.
Apply online at www.friendsoflakemonroe.org/septic or call Maggie Sullivan at 812-558-0217 to apply over the phone.
